The Seasonal Guide to Regional Queensland Travel

Regional Queensland's seasons divide into the two-season pattern that the southern visitor's four-season expectation does not anticipate: the wet season from November through April and the dry season from May through October.

The Dry Season: May to October

The comfortable months — mild temperatures of 20-28 degrees, low humidity, clear skies, minimal rainfall. The optimal period for the outdoor activity, the highway travel, the regional exploration. The stinger-free ocean swimming on the Capricorn Coast. The fossicking conditions at the Sapphire Gemfields. The comfortable after-work pool time. Pack for warm days and cool evenings.

The Wet Season: November to April

The hot months — temperatures of 30-42 degrees with high humidity that the air conditioning resolves indoors and the pool resolves in the water. The afternoon thunderstorms whose dramatic buildup the flat inland horizon makes spectacular. The cyclone risk north of Rockhampton. The occasional flooding that the river systems produce and that the highway closures may temporarily impose. The turtle nesting season at Mon Repos near Bundaberg — November through March.

Property-Specific Seasons

Emerald: best May-September, the Gemfest at Rubyvale in July. Rockhampton: best May-September, the Capricorn Coast year-round but stinger season restricts ocean swimming November-May. Bundaberg: best May-October for comfort, November-March for turtles at Mon Repos, Lady Musgrave Island year-round weather permitting.

Getting Started

The small business whose regional travel currently operates informally — the Google search, the personal credit card, the expense claim — can formalise the programme in five business days with the Travellers Group corporate account. The setup requires: the ABN, the billing contact, the estimated room-nights, the authorised bookers. The return begins immediately: the negotiated rate saving on the first booking, the direct billing eliminating the first expense claim, the standardised invoicing simplifying the first accounts-payable cycle. No minimum commitment means the small business whose travel volume varies seasonally or project-by-project pays only for the rooms it uses at the rate the account provides.
